What is Therapy?

Have you gone through something painful and wondered why you aren’t feeling “back to normal” yet? Or maybe you’ve started to wonder why you can’t stop certain patterns in your life, despite all your best efforts? Having questions about mental health is normal, and therapy can be helpful in helping you find answers.

While sometimes difficult to understand, most mental health concerns are understandable responses to challenging life events.  Through identifying the elements of life that taught a person to feel a certain way, people are often able to identify strategies for teaching themselves to think and feel something else in therapy; examples of these strategies include practicing a new thought or taking a chance and saying a little bit more to one’s partner. Sometimes people notice that they are not yet able to discuss difficult events or themes in their lives in therapy; we work on self soothing or emotional regulation strategies in sessions to support people’s ability to reduce felt distress in the moment, both to help people outside of session and so that they can feel more prepared to explore deeper or more subtle emotional landscapes in session. While one’s distant past and family history may be relevant and or a place of challenges, people are free to explore or not explore those parts of their lives in therapy to whichever degree they feel ready.
